Bully or Victim?

I bet every one of us has seen someone being bullied. But did we actually do something to help?

When I was in kindergarten there was a girl who never played with the others. She didn’t have friends. Soon some boys started laughing at her and saying mean things to her. During the following weeks the situation got worse! They started stealing her shoes and jackets but none of the adults noticed anything. However a lot of kids, including me, saw what the girl was going through but no one did anything to help her.Bullying can happen anywhere: in school, at work, in the streets, on the internet – everywhere! People who are being bullied often keep quiet about what is happening and don’t ask anyone for help. This can cause the victims to experience depression. People who are being bullied often have self-doubt and start hating themselves. In such situations especially children can become afraid of going to school and it is hard for them to socialize with others. Some suffer more than others and in some cases this self-hatred and the fear of others is very hard to overcome.  Many victims, especially children, need a lot of therapy after such experiences.

The reason why people are bullied is in most cases unknown. Sometimes the bully himself is going through some difficulties with family or friends and needs to let their anger out. In other cases the bully just wants to humiliate others in public. Either way it’s not okay.

So, what can we do to help people who are being bullied? One very simple way to help is just defend the victim and tell the bully to stop the bulling. If you are afraid of doing that, which is okay, just explain the whole situation to a teacher or an adult. Show the victim that you are there to help. The important thing is just to stand up for them. Be brave.

Bullying is very common and it can destroy people’s lives. I think it is really important to discuss this topic, starting in kindergarten, to avoid as much bullying as possible. Be attentive and thoughtful, and remember that words can hurt.
