In this post I want to tell you why you should take a little bit more time to read through the labels of cosmetic products and what chemicals you should especially avoid.
Using chemical cosmetics can lead to bad health. Many people want to lead a healthy lifestyle. They start to eat more vegetables and do more sports but not too many people consider the fact that also using the right cosmetic products can make you healthier. Several chemicals are found in cosmetics and our bodies absorb about 60 percent of what we put on our skin. The chemicals then can enter our blood stream, which can lead to cancer, acne, allergies, eczema and hormone disruption. Using cosmetics containing hormone disrupting chemicals is especially dangerous for teenagers as they are developing at this age.
Read labels for specific information on the product’s ingredients. Sadly you can’t always trust the claims on cosmetic and body care products like “organic” or “natural”. Words like those are not very well defined. If a product is labeled with “organic” it only means that most ingredients are organic but not all of them. And this is the tricky thing. How companies have to label their products is so unregulated. So you cannot just trust the claims but you have to read the ingredients list carefully.
There are many ingredients you should avoid in your products. Lead, Formaldehyde, Parabens, Fragrance, Phthalates, BHA and BHT and Methylisothiazolinone are some of the ingredients that should not be in your cosmetic products. There are lots more but those are some of the most common ones that you should stay clear of. These ingredients can be contained in all kinds of cosmetic products like toothpaste, body lotions, perfumes, deodorants but also sun screens, lipsticks or shampoos.
Switching to natural cosmetics without any harmful chemicals can help you to reduce the risk of having cancer, acne or other diseases. I know it need a lot of time to read through all the ingredients of a product but it’s really worth it. Using natural cosmetics can lead to healthy skin and just all in all a healthier YOU.
