Obviously different, maybe a little crazy but definitely amazing, that’s the duo consisting of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun. Tyler is the crazy vocalist, he can sing like you wouldn’t believe and Josh plays the drums like he’s been doing it forever. These two formed the band in 2009 and called it 21 Pilots. Tyler also plays the piano and occasionally the ukulele. Most of their songs they write together. These two can be so adorable together!
I especially love Josh’s hair at the moment since he has dyed it red to match the album cover which is so cool. Fun fact: He did it himself!
I have tried a lot of times to describe their genre of music, but most of the times I have failed miserably. The internet hasn’t been too helpful either, ‘indie-pop’ and ‘alternative hip-hop’ don’t really do it for me. The most accurate thing I managed to come up with was ‘aggressive poetry’. Their lyrics really do have deep meaning. Most of their lyrics contain allusions to Christian theology and have messages (even if implied) about God, and all members of the band are Christians, however, the band is not considered Christian.
The band put out two self-promoted albums, Twenty One Pilots in 2009 and Regional at Best in 2011, before being signed by the Atlantic Records subsidiary label Fueled by Ramen (many amazing bands have been signed by them) in 2012. They released their signed debut, Vessel, with Fueled by Ramen in 2013. Their second signed album, Blurryface, was released on May 15, 2015 through the same label. Their last album made it into the German, Austrian, Swiss and British charts and also had its major breakthrough in the US with almost 150,000 records sold and the album reached #1 in the album charts.
Blurryface is my personal favorite since the whole album tells a story and the name of the album comes from a fictional character created by Tyler and Josh “that represents all the things […] everyone around is insecure about.”
I really enjoy listening to 21 Pilots because their lyrics are amazing and because their music is refreshingly different. They are not like every other song that’s being played on the radio. I mean, of course I do listen to the radio and I enjoy it but most of the modern songs do have a similar sound to them. I still think that it’s really cool that their song “Stressed Out” is being played on the radio. It’s the best thing when I rap along and people give me the weirdest looks! You should totally check it out.
My favorite TOP songs (at the moment!):
- House of Gold – Vessel
- Tear in my Heart – Blurryface
- The Run and Go – Vessel
- Stressed Out – Blurryface (I swear I could do the whole rap part in my sleep!)
- Ode to Sleep
So, that’s it for now. If you have any ideas about my blog or you want to suggest a song I should consider for my top five then let me know.
